What to change when you compare two hooks
Isolate one decision — the emotion, the line, or the first frame — and read only the metric that decision can move.
Pick one lever
Emotion: shock versus relief, same line length, same demo.
Line: two ways to say the same tension.
First frame: face versus the result, same words.
If you change all three, you will not know which one earned the watch.
Match the metric to the lever
The first seconds tell you about the hook. The click tells you whether the demo paid it off. The install or signup tells you whether the promise matched the product. Do not blame a hook for a broken signup page.
A result you can reuse
Write it as a rule: “For this audience, a complaint outperformed a flex.” That sentence is more valuable than the ad that won.
